A tone sequence listening quiz that trains students to hear two, three, or four Mandarin tones in a row.
Tone sequence practice
The Intermediate Tone Quiz trains students to hear tones in short sequences. In the upper left, students choose whether they want two, three, or four sounds back to back.
The screen shows a matrix of tone choices. The first column represents the first sound heard, the second column represents the second sound heard, and so on. After all columns are selected, the student submits the answer and sees which tones were correct.
The displayed Pinyin is intentionally shown without tone marks. These are nonsense sentence-style sequences designed to stretch tonal hearing in a safe environment.
